Maximizing Your Starwood Points

Due to repeated requests, I am re posting this article. (It was originally posted 01/01/08)

This article is a synopsis of the Starwoods loyalty program. With proper participation, you can get free hotel stays and round trip tickets around the world on the airline of your choice with minimal effort and best of all, absolutely free!

(read till the bottom- it's well worth your time!)

Starwoods is the parent company of a large chain of hotels including Sheraton, Westin W Hotels, St. Regis, Ritz Carlton and more. The loyalty/points program is called the Starwoods Preferred Guests program. There are a few ways to redeem Starwood points

#1. Hotel stays.

Points can be used for unrestricted no blackout date hotel stays. That means if there is room available you can reserve it with points. Awards range from 2,000 to 25,000 points

#2. Cash and Points.

This option allows reduced point stays while paying a small portion in cash. For example a category 3 room that is regularly 7,000 points or about $250, can be had for 2,800 points and $45 dollars under this portion of the program.

#3. Upgrades.

Starting at 1,000 points a night for a category 1, going up for higher class hotels.

#4. 5th Night Free.

When you reserve a category 3 hotel and up, a five night stay will cost you only enough points for a four night stay.

#5. Nights and Flights.

This offer gives both airline points and hotel stays as follows: 60,000 points will get you 50,000 miles to the airline of your choice and 5 nights at a category 3 hotel 70,000 points will get you 50,000 miles to the airline of your choice and 5 nights at a category 4 hotel.

#6. Transfer to Airline Miles.

The reason Starwood points are so valuable is because they transfer out to any loyalty/miles program at a 1:1 (or sometimes 1:2) ratio! All other programs come no where near -if they allow transferring out at all. Not only that, but when you transfer 20,000 points to an airline mileage program you get a 5,000 point bonus, so 20,000 points transfers into 25,000 miles, and that is enough for a domestic round trip ticket on almost any large airline.

There are various way to accumulate Starwood points is either by staying nights at a Starwood hotel or by spending on a Starwoods Preferred Guest credit card from AMEX. Both of these methods take very long for the average person to accrue meaningful amounts of Starwood points.

There is a quicker way.

American Express issues two credit cards that offer points for the Starwoods Preferred Guest program. The Starwoods Preferred Guest consumer credit card and the Starwoods Preferred Guest business credit card. Each one offers a 10,000 point bonus after the first purchase. If you sign up for both cards (and anyone can-even without a Federal Tax Identification Number(TIN), by making a name for your business, let's call it Jack's Services and as a Sole Proprietorship, or self owned business you don't need a TIN, rather your social security number takes the place) that will quickly put you at 25,000 points, when you transfer them to an airline miles program!

As of now there is nothing against the rules of the program to sign up and receive the bonus more than once. So after sixty days pass, apply once again for these two cards and once again you'll receive a 20,000 Starwood points bonus.

As an added tip if you want you can do this for your wife as well and get an additional 20,000 starwood points, or 25,000 airline miles. You can even combine both accounts afterwards at no cost , so long as they both have the same address !

All in all, Starwoods Preferred Guest Point Program is one of the best programs credit cards offer both in terms of sign up bonuses and ease of use- be it for redeeming rooms or transferring to airlines mileage programs.

300,000 Miles in Credit Card Signup Bonuses in a Single App-o-Rama

Regular readers of this blog are certainly familiar with credit card signup bonuses (and in many cases, familiar with which credit cards will let you sign up over and over and receive the bonuses each time).

I’ve earned many more miles than this from credit card bonuses over time, but Chris Guillebeau chronicles his stab at 300,000 miles from credit card signup bonuses in a single go. Pretty impressive in his own right, and worth reading for folks that haven’t gone down the credit card signup bonus route in the past. (I also highly recommend the credit card section on Gary Steiger’s website as well as archived posts here of course!)

Chase Credit Card Holders in Good Standing $5 Per Day In July For Any Purchase ($155 Max)

Today in snail mail I received a phamplet from Chase which I almost fed to the paper shreader, but something told me to read it. It says that for the month of July, Chase Credit Card holders that received this phamplet would received $5/day for each day they made purchases in the month of July, no matter how much the purchase -- for a total up to $155 for the month. Keep in mind first you must be a Chase Credit Card holder, second you must receive this phamplet, third you must be in good standing. This may be people that have extremely good credit. I have an APR of 9.99%. In the last couple of months it dropped 2-3 points, suddenly.

Don't get upset if you didn't get an invite/don't have good credit. I made it clear what and who are eligible for this program.

I noticed at the top of page 3, where the pages were glued together it says this offer is for my -regular- CC.

In addition for getting this offer on my -regular- CC, it has been idle for over a year.

Thanks to B.G. for forwarding this to dealsnmore

American Airlines AAdvantage Miles Program Review

Although almost all the big airline miles programs are very east to accrue miles with, American Airlines AAdvantage miles program is arguably the easiest miles program to actually be able to redeem miles for tickets.
The normal rewards are as follows: (Economy/ Business/First Class)
Domestic North America 25,000/ 45,000 /60,000
From North America to Europe 40,000/ 60,000/ 100,000
From North America to Asia/Mid East 75,000 /135,000 /180,000
For a more comprehensive chart click Here to see the chart from the American Airlines website

How To Earn Miles:
You can earn miles either by flying or by spending on the AAdvantage credit cards by citi.
As of now there are two Citi AAdvantage cards that give signup bonus miles after first purchase.
The American AAdvantage Citibank Consumer Card and
The American AAdvantage Citibank Business Card. Don't know how to get a business card? Find out Here
Right now the consumer card gives a 25,000 mile bonus after you spend $750 and the business card give a 25,000 mile bonus after you spend $750.
The Annual fee is $75/yr on the consumer card and $85/yr on the business card, but the fee is waived for the first year.
Alternately, if you don't want to spend $750, you can get 20,000 miles after first purchase on both the AAdvantage Consumer Card and the AAdvantage Business Card.
Currently there seems to be no limit as to how many times you can apply for these cards and be eligible for the bonus, nor does there seem to be any limit on how many of the same card you can have at once! (I have 5 of each).
You can apply for both the consumer and business card on the same day, but you should wait at least 60 days before you reapply for a second set of the cards.
Of course if you don't have an AAdvantage account either they will automatically give you one with the card or you can sign up here before you apply for the credit cards.
-Also, be sure to always put you're AAdvantage number on the application so that the miles will get credited to the same account.
If you sign up for the two AAdvantage cards and the two Starwoods Cards that will give you 75,000 miles right off the bat!! And you can do this every two months!!! You can be flying around the world in no time at no cost to you!

How To Get A Business Credit Card Without A TIN

Anyone can get a business credit card even if you don't have a federal tax identification number-TIN.

Here's how:

A self owned business is known as a sole proprietorship and it doesn't need a TIN. Rather your social security number is in place of the TIN.
On the application fill in the name of business of your choice, such as Jack's Suits. Then enter your social security number in the place for the TIN and write that it's a sole proprietorship business.

This was sent to me by a friend:
Many people aren’t aware of the fact that anyone can apply for business credit cards, even if they are not part of a corporation or LLC. Just use your own name as the business name, and your Social Security Number as the Tax ID.
Why? Because any individual can be a business as well. The business type is called a sole proprietorship. Maybe you sell garage sale items or crafts on eBay. Boom! You’re a sole proprietorship. Done any freelance work for a friend? You’re a sole proprietorship. This is the most simple business entity, but it is fully legit and recognized by the IRS. Unless you apply for another one, the name of your business is your legal name, eg. John Doe.
When you apply for a business credit card, you will have to put down both your Social Security number and the Tax ID number for the business. If you are a Sole Proprietorship, you Tax ID is your Social Security Number. (Unless you filed for a EIN). For the vast majority of business credit cards, if even you are a corporation or LLC, you will still be personally liable for business debts. That’s why they’ll usually ask you for your SSN anyways.
Remember, if you are a sole proprietorship there is no legal distinction between you and your business anyhow. Business debts are personal debts. Personal debts are business debts.
(Also, unless you want to deduct your purchases as qualified business expenses on your tax return, you really don’t need to worry about any tax issues or filing anything special with the IRS. You can simply buy things with the card and pay off the balance as you would your other credit cards. If you do want to take deductions, please consult your tax advisor.

Does Opening a Lot of Credit Cards Hurt My Credit Score

Below is a chart from the FICO website showing what determines your credit score:

FICO® Scores are calculated from a lot of different credit data in your credit report. This data can be grouped into five categories as outlined below. The percentages in the chart reflect how important each of the categories is in determining your FICO® score.

Payment history: 35%, Amounts owed: 30%, Length of credit history: 15%, New credit: 10%, Types of credit used: 10%

These percentages are based on the importance of the five categories for the general population. For particular groups - for example, people who have not been using credit long - the importance of these categories may be somewhat different.

----------------

The more accounts you have the more accounts will be in good standing in terms of payment and amounts owed so this directly affects for the good 65% of your score.

It is true that opening new cards will also directly affect 10% of your score - the part the depends on new credit. But, new cards are only considered new for 6 months. So even on this portion of the score there is only a detrimental effect for 6 months at most, so unless you are planning on leasing a car or buying a house WITHIN the next 6 months there is nothing to worry about.
